Party dress

This is a dress I made for the office christmas party. Its a sheer, shimmery material with flocked brown polka dots over a brown duchess satin (the white at the neck is just the slip my dummy is wearing) and from a vintage simplicity pattern. The last 3 inches of hem are just the sheer material, which is why they look a little different in the picture.

It was actually a pretty simple pattern. I'm working on a version with sleeves for day. Its black wool gabardine with a houndstooth inset in the front. I don't know what to do about the skirt, though: I don't think the gab will hold the shape of this skirt well. So I can do an ad hoc dirndl, ad hoc pleats, or - ? Skirt suggestions welcome, and I'll post the new version when its done.

Better Late Than Never?

I have been trying to finish some projects I started months ago. I am going to finish my retro apron next and will post that photo. Then I promise to keep up with the projects.
The pattern is Simplicity 4093 and it was easier to make than I thought it would be. This is one of the first blouses I have made that fits okay. They are usually saggy in the top or too low so my bra is exposed, which I don't like. This blouse has a zipper down the left side. I definitely plan on making more from this pattern. You can also make a skirt, pants, and jacket.

Historic Dress Collection at the University of Virginia

I found this link a few days ago and thought you fellow-sewists would appreciate it. It's a collection of historic dress at the University of Virginia. Lots of great inspiration there.

Houndstooth jacket

Behold the bolero! I am immensely pleased with this. Its black and white houndstooth babywhale corduroy lined with a black and white floral silhouette lining. Its the first de novo thing I've made in a while - I've been busy repairing and letting things out, dull but productive stuff. Made from a vintage simplicity pattern (more details of construction and back photo on sewinginthecity.blogspot.com).

I intend to make this jacket again out of a deep plum wool I ordered, with a matching straight skirt. I may also baste on a lovely full mink collar I have lying around (to the hypothetical deep plum version, not this one).

who can wear a pattern size 6-10?
in my latest stroll through LanetzLiving I found this gem.
What a fabulous dress.

cute little plaid jacket

This is what I've begun to refer to as the Plaid Jacket of Awesomeness. I've still got to sew on the rest of the snaps (the buttons are dummies) but it's done enough that I wore it today!

Sorry for the TP roll there if it offends anyone, my bathroom has the best light...

I can't seem to figure out right now what pattern it is, but I can look it up if anyone wants to know... It's an unlined jacket fitted jacket with several different collar and sleeve variations. It doesn't look like it on the hanger, but it really is fitted and curvy with cuffed bell sleeves that come to the mid-forearm.

Here's a close up of the plaid pattern and the cute vintage buttons.

I used a flannel shirting and since the jacket is unlined, I underlined all the pieces using a deep purple twill and then covered the inside seams with bias tape.

Unfortunately, now that I've about got it all done, the weather is turning too cold to wear it!

I might work on making a purple skirt though to have a cute little suit.
