So far I have only made one item of clothing, using Vogue V8146. It is my first ever item of clothing. I made the jacket but as yet have not got around to the dress.

A Dress for February

Hello, my name is Mikki and I live in Leeds in the UK.  I've only been sewing about four years after being convinced for most of my life that it was far too complicated a skill for a clumsy fool like me to acquire!

 

Luckily a good (and very patient) friend managed to persuade my flatmate and I that rather than wasting our time sitting around drinking wine and moaning about men, we could be making our own dresses, drinking wine and moaning about men at the same time.

 

Prior to that I had a terrible eBay habit and spent a small fortune on 60s dresses.  Now I spend a fortune of fabric, notions and vintage sewing patterns instead.

 

So my sewing is largely about the dresses and all about the 1960s.

 

This year I've set myself a challenge of making at least one dress a month and updating my blog with my progress, here is my dress for February:

An introduction...

Hi Everyone,

My name is Suzie and I've been lurking on Sew Retro for quite awhile. I'm mostly interested in patterns from the 30's to the early 60's (although I think all eras have some wonderful styles to offer). I haven't been sewing for very long but I hope to one day have a wardrobe full of home-sewn clothing. I have recently finished my first vintage sewing project, a 1950s blouse pattern, Vogue 9278. Here's how it turned out:

Vogue 1172 - the toile

I cut out the toile in size 10.  According to the pattern envelope I should be a size 14 with my measurements.

No immediate fitting dramas with this one.  I should get more 1957 reissues - they built them for my shape!

Hi Sew Retro Community!

I started sewing about 3 years ago when I got to be a stay at home mother of 2 and have been trying to teach myself ever since. I was supposed to have learned how to cook for the family, but sewing seemed much more fun (and no-one has starved yet....)

Originally Victorian and Edwardian costuming appealed to me, but I started blogging about 18 months ago and discovered all of you wonderful and talented Retro Sewing People and got hooked! What can I say, I am just fashion fickle - I love it all! At the same time I started blogging, I also became addicted to collecting original patterns - from 1860's onwards - I am progressively scanning them and putting them on my pattern blog here

I just finished sewing a 1952 Bathing Costume (Vogue 7860) that I thought I might share. It was sewn on my handcrank Singer 201, so it is carbon neutral constructed as well (and the zipper and the fashion fabric are recycled!)

one day skirt

This was the easiest skirt to put together. Vogue 6702.

The description reads,"skirt has seamed front with two box pleats for greater back fullness." That pretty much says it all. There is no date printed anywhere on the pattern or the instructions, but I'm guessing later 1940's.

This is actually the mock-up I made before I cut into the beautiful brown, windowpane check, wool that I plan on using for the final version. I made no changes to the pattern at all, my only regret is that my legs aren't willowy as the model on the pattern envelope illustration. If you come across this pattern snap it up. It goes together quickly and is easy to wear. I can't wait to sew it up with nice fabric!
