I decided to start with the simplest vintage pattern I had. 2 main pattern pieces, no zippers, not even a buttonhole (it has a buttonloop at the back neck). I'm making version 3, and if I'm too dumpy in the waist for it, I'll add high belt loops and give it an empire waist instead. I'm making it out a a lightweight citrus green cotton. And if I'm feeling froggy, maybe I'll add a little ruffle or something to zazz it up.
I picked this one one for: 1) instant gratification. This can't possibly take more than 2 hours, and might be way less; 2) low yardage, so if it's hideous, I won't be heartbroken; 3) high probability of my actually making it, since it should require the barest skills & time; and 4) will be able to lop of the top and make a skirt if it doesn't suit me.
Next month, I'll be a teeny tiny bit more ambitious (baby steps... maybe a zipper? gasp!).
