I would like to do some retro sewing but really think that the only way I am going to get a good fit is buy purchasing a dressmaker's form...but what kind?

I had read a few tutorials on making your own dress form with duct tape and a t-shirt and having someone
(hubby thought this sounded fun!)
wrap you, giving you a pretty close form to fit with...but does this work as well as a purchased dress form?
I have really enjoyed looking at all the posts in the archives and look forward to sewing some lovely 1940-50's clothing soon!
