Simplicity 2591

 It seems early to be thinking about Fall, but it has rained here all night and drizzled the best part of today. When I look up on the Mesa it is covered in snow. How did October already get here?

Here is my version of Simplicity 2591. 

The fabric is vintage and was from my stash. The fabric has that stylized brushstroke thing going on that makes me believe it is 50's fabric (also was 35" wide).

Introduction to Sorbetsurprise

I have just joined Sew Retro which I think is a fab blog and I just love browsing through the vintage patterns, vintage fabrics, vintage inspired outfits etc!  A little about me, I live in Wales and enjoy spending time sewing, dressmaking and generally collecting patterns.  I prefer to sew dresses more then any other garment and enjoy using vintage patterns and adding my own modern twist. 

So here are a few examples of my retro work so far:

1950's Vogue Pattern

Pretty pink cotton slub and floral buttons, I made this for my halfway-to-50 party last year and it is a firm favourite.

Simplicity 3780  a reissue of a 1950's pattern

Super Simple Dirndl Skirt - tutorial

Lying awake last night, with that familiar anxious feeling I always get as I'm approaching the end of a project and itching for the next, I very nearly got out of bed to make this Super Simple Dirndl Skirt.  But I didn't.  I made it today instead, taking up only an hour of my son's hour-and-a-half nap.  And I still had enough time left for a coffee.

Another Skirt - Not So Fast and Easy

I am a little ahead of schedule on my one skirt per month.  I have finished my skirt for February -  McCall 8086 from 1950.

This skirt is made in a heavy dark brown twill.  I used a vinegar/water solution to set the pleats.  Speaking of pleats, I had a hard time figuring out the instructions on how to make these pleats.  Multiple degrees and I still have a hard time deciphering pattern instructions.  If you would like to learn more about the sewing process on this skirt and for many more pictures, check out my blog.

I had to make changes to the length of the pleats.  Being a shorty, I never considered the length of the pleats before trying on the skirt.  Ugh, they ended in an unattractive place.  A few minutes with the seam ripper solved that problem.  Zipper is centered again.  It was a little more problematic than usual for a centered zipper due to operator error - I moved the pins without thinking.

Twin Spruce Dress: Simplicity 3965

Hi Everyone!
I recently finished a lovely little 1950's full-skirted dress, Simplicity 3965. It's a true vintage project - made from a vintage pattern as well as vintage rayon fabric!

I spent a lot of time on the construction of this dress and it turned out beautifully. I'm thrilled with the results! (It's really comfortable, too.)
