Finally getting back on the sewing bandwagon after a hugely busy summer. This dress was created to wear to the fair. Gingham + Vintage + Western = Fair

The pattern was dreamy to put together. Kimono sleeves instead of set in sleeves yielded a fairly quick sew.

I did make up a different skirt, I wasn't keen on the pattern matching with the six gores. 

I'm very happy with the results.

The result of inspiration

Hi dear sewers, I'm here again to show the dress I finished this week, it is inspired by this pattern and I looked up the fabric from my stash as close as possible, I drew the pattern (I have the pattern, only the image), so it gave me enough headaches for proper operation.

Simplicity 3039 - a full-skirted shirtdress from 1959

I recently finished a 1959 Shirtdress with a full skirt that has darling little pleats in clusters of four.  This is my first full-skirted number, and as you can see I am a little afraid of an underskirt at this stage - give me a few days!

Simplicity 2549

This is my dress, which I LOVE! I'm calling it my cupcake dress, because I feel like a cupcake wearing it. I also made the belt, using a vintage buckle shaped like a flower.

This is my pattern, from the 1950s.

 Thanks to everyone in this wonderful community for your assistance in the fitting.

I am wearing a crinoline under the skirt to give it a bit of volume.  Its not very 'foofy', I may boost it up or make a new one.  Do you think it could be more voluminous ?

Next thing on the list is a cute fluffy pink angora bolero from Bea's knit along, teams with it perfectly methinks?

My next project

My friend ange and I are stash busting, both patterns and fabric.

This is to be my first project - I hope to finish it in the next week and put up pictures but I am undecided about somethings and wondered if I could get your opinion.

1. Should I pipe the pocket and/or anywhere else on the onsie in order to tie it into the skirt - and if I did do you think it would make the onsie look funny on it's own?

2. Should I build a petticoat into the skirt?

Vintage Vogue Competition

Sew Today are running a Vintage Vogue competition and here is my entry! You start with a current pattern from the Vintage Vogue range and adapt/ customise/ modernise in any way you like. I used V1171 and Steven Alan/ APC/ red, white and blue as my inspiration. I have charted my progress throughout this project on my blog, Goldfinch and Eagle, from pattern adaptation through construction. There are loads more photos there. I plan to wear it to Vintage Goodwood this weekend.

Hi I am a keen maker of all sorts of things, and apart from having a bit of a thing for making dinosaurs, I love all things vintage. I blog about all this and about life in general, check it out. I have been getting into making vintage clothes lately, sewn and knitted, so I thought that I would join Sew Retro for inspiration and advice!

My most recent project has been a yoke top made from a vintage dress pattern, which I originally thought was from the 1950s but now think is more 1960s. I have worn it loads actually, and am planning to either make a long version or swap it for a similar smaller pattern as this is a bit big (size 14). Anyone interested?

June's Poppy Dress

I was able to get the pieces cut out for The Poppy Dress and started to sew. I am really pleased with how easily it is coming together and how nice it is to work with this pattern and fabric.

Vogue 8956: Recommended for twirling!

This is Vogue 8956, from 1956. It is my new go-to dress for dancing at wedding receptions! It's comfy and very twirly! Making it was a little tedious, but totally worth it. (All those released pleats! Ack!)

This dress included many firsts for me: Underlining, horsehair braid hem, contour belt, and more.

I should have used one of the crisp fabrics recommended on the pattern envelope so I wouldn't need to underline, but I wanted to use the five yards of loosely woven silk pique my husband gave me for Valentine's Day. I had a major disaster trying to fuse the edges of my underlining to my dress fabric with the wrong fusible product. It was very bad, requiring me to recut pieces and rush order extra fabric. Thank goodness it all worked out in time for the wedding! Details at Chronically Uncool...

I've been sewing on this dress at every spare moment and I've finally reached the halfway point!

I can't thank everyone enough for your incredible feedback. I love it! I've decided to take a personal risk and enter this dress into Pattern Review's Vintage Pattern Contest. *eep*

PS: Have I ever mentioned my zipper phobia? This one has a big 'un that I need to sew in down the back. Tips and tricks for sewing an invisible zipper are welcome. Otherwise, I'll end up bald and stressed out. Not a good look when wearing the dress, methinks.

Wildflower-ly Gorgeous!

My fabric arrived for my Wildwood Flower dress! Oh me, oh my! It's even more stunning in person and worth every penny I paid ($9.50 US per yard!).

Inspiration dress*

The colours are amazing and very saturated. The print is spectacular; the large peonies (the orange flowers) are at least 5" across. Yum!

Advance 8171

This is the pattern cover. I made the view in the middle out of fake silk shantung.

Back view. The lighting makes it look so wrinkly and lumpy. It doesn't look that bad in person. I like my hair.

It slipped off my shoulder a bit in the picture. The straps do lie flat.

But I post it because while it is not an epic fail, I doubt I will ever wear it. The bust area fits terribly. It rides up, it has lumpy seams. Overall, it sucks. But, hey- I thought I would share it anyways.

Pattern notes: the bodice should have been shortened for petites, but there was no line for it. Advance patterns have bad instructions. I didn't realize how low the back drops, so you can't wear a bra, so the bust was extremely gaping, and I had to try to fix it too late. But, none of that would apply if I was patient and made muslins. I enjoy slapping things together, so I refuse! haha.
